About us
Cutting Clay was founded in 2021 by Ewan, who combined his engineering knowledge with his wife’s silver clay jewellery‑making skills to explore how 3D‑printed cutters and tools could help her creative process.
He began with a single 3D printer and gradually refined his skills and equipment to hone the process for the perfect cutting edge, along with several other tools for clay artists.
Fast forward to 2025: the business was well established, with a loyal following of customers who loved Ewan’s designs. However, personal circumstances led him to sell the business.
My wife Tracy and I drew many parallels with Ewan and Nicole. I also came from an engineering background, and Tracy had been creating silver clay jewellery for many years — in fact, she was already a customer and keen follower of Cutting Clay. It therefore seemed a natural decision to buy the business from Ewan.
The first six months were a steep learning curve as I got to grips with every aspect of the business: designing, 3D printing, website updates, social media, sales, and packaging.
Since then, I’ve introduced many new products — not just cutter developments like the Dynamic Duos, Bail Sets and Bezel Builders, but also tools such as the Snake Rollers and Bail Stands.
Tracy provides constant guidance and advice, tests new products to ensure they perform well, and creates the demonstration videos we post on social media.
I love this business — I’m genuinely passionate about it. So much so that I left my engineering career in December 2026 to run Cutting Clay full time, and I’ve never looked back! I love the design aspect, coming up with new ideas and shapes, and I equally enjoy being part of the silver clay community. The artists inspire me, spark new ideas, and give brilliant feedback on my products.
My aim is to continue Cutting Clay’s ethos of providing the best cutters and tools for this amazing craft, while introducing new products that support metal clay artists. With silver prices being so unstable over the past year, I’ve focused on developing tools that help jewellery makers use less
clay while still achieving beautiful results.
I hope you’ll enjoy using the cutters and tools on offer at Cutting Clay for making beautiful jewellery.
